Union Public Service Commission abbreviated as UPSC. Today we are going to give you detailed information about the civil service exam conducted by UPSC through which you can become a top officer in the Indian government.

UPSC Civil Services Syllabus
Friends, this exam is conducted in three stages. In which the first stage is the prelim exam, the second stage is the main exam and the third stage is the interview exam. The complete information of which is given below.
1) Prelim Exam
In the prelim exam, you have two papers. (1) General Study abbreviated GS and (2) Aptitude Test abbreviated CSET. Both these papers are of MCQ type and you will get two hours duration. Both papers come in Hindi and English language. There is also a negative marking in which one mark is deducted if you get three questions wrong.
The first paper which is General Studies will be of 200 marks and it will have 100 questions so one question will carry two marks. The second paper is on CSET and will also carry 200 marks and will have 80 questions. The second paper is only for passing. His marks are not counted in further merit. Only the marks of the first paper are considered.
In the second paper, you must score 33% marks to pass. If you get 67 marks in the second paper out of 200 marks, you will pass.
If you get fewer marks in the first paper and you score more marks in the second paper and another candidate scores more marks than you in the first paper and scores as much as the cut-off in the second paper and if your total is more then you will be failed. Because you have to keep in mind the marks of the first paper itself to get merit. The second paper is only for passing.
2) Main Exam
Candidates who clear the prelims exam have to give the mains exam. A total of 9 papers are to be given in the main examination. All these papers are descriptive. In which you have to write the answer.
Out of the 9 papers of the main examination, the first 2 papers are only for passing. whose marks are not considered for further merit. Out of which one paper in English and another paper in any language of your choice from the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
English and Gujarati are the two papers to pass for our Gujaratis. If you want to give a paper in any other language then you can give it. Both these papers are of 300-300 marks each. Out of which you have to get 25 percent marks to pass. That means you have to get 75 marks out of 300 then you pass.
The remaining 7 papers have to be given only if you pass these two papers, otherwise if you do not pass these two papers, there is no point in giving the other 7 papers. Because if you do not pass these two papers, none of the next 7 papers will be checked.
One of the next papers will be on Essay Writing in which you have to write an essay considering current situations and trends. The paper of General Study-1 will appear in the second paper. In which questions are asked based on history, geography, and culture.
In the paper of General Study-II, questions will be asked on all these subjects: the Constitution of India, polity, and relationship with foreign countries. The paper of General Study-3 will ask questions related to Economics and related subjects.
In the paper of General Study-4, there is a paper dealing with ethics i.e. moral values in which questions will be asked based on it.
You have to choose the subject of the remaining 2 papers yourself and the paper will come on top of it. One of the 26 different subjects offered by UPSC has to be chosen and a paper has to be given on it.
That is if you like history subject then you have to give two papers on history subject. You don’t need to keep the same subject in this exam with which you have graduated. If you have done arts and want to choose commerce subject then you can.
In this way, you will get a total of 9 papers. In which the first 2 will be for passing only. Out of the other 7 papers, one is essay writing, the other four are general studies, and the other 2 are optional.
The marks of these 7 papers are the same i.e. the paper will be of 250 marks. There are a total of 1750 marks and your merit is decided based on these marks. You must score 25% marks in each of these papers. That means it is mandatory to get 25 marks out of 250.
3) Interview Exam
Candidates who clear the main exam are called for the interview exam. Candidates are called for an interview by UPSC in Delhi. In which their interview is conducted and marks are given to them out of a total of 275 marks.
Thus total merit is prepared out of 2025 marks by taking 1750 marks for the main exam and 275 marks for the interview exam.

UPSC Prelims Exam will be held in Hindi and English language only. But you can give the papers of the main exam in the Gujarati language also. Choose any of the languages offered by UPSC and you can give the paper in that language.
